Overview Coronavirus
Coronavirus is a large virus family that can cause diseases such as the common cold and even acute severe respiratory syndrome (SARS) and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS). China recently broke out a disease that has spread to the world, namely COVID-19. It has been confirmed that the root cause is a new type of virus called 2019 Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV).
Many are currently known about the new virus. Major public health organizations, including the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), are closely monitoring the development of the virus and releasing relevant information through their respective websites. These organizations also issued some suggestions on how to prevent and treat diseases caused by the virus.
Symptom
People infected with the new coronavirus may develop the following signs and symptoms within 2-14 days after exposure:
Fever
Cough
Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
The severity of symptoms of new coronavirus infection varies from person to person, some are mild, some are severe, and may even lead to death. This disease has yet to be understood in depth, but most critically ill patients are elderly people or those suffering from other serious diseases. This situation is similar to severe patients with other respiratory diseases such as influenza.
When should I see a Doctor?
If you have symptoms of a new coronavirus infection and may have been exposed to the virus, please contact your doctor immediately. Tell the doctor if you have traveled abroad recently. Before going to the clinic, please call your doctor and tell the truth about your symptoms, recent travel history, and possible exposure to the virus.
More information
Cause
People have not yet fully figured out how contagious the new coronavirus is or how it spreads. The virus seems to be spread between people in close contact, and it may also be spread through respiratory droplets released when a virus-infected person coughs or sneezes.
As for whether normal people touch their own mouths after touching surfaces touched by a virus-infected person, it is still unknown whether it will cause infection.
Risk factors
Risk factors for COVID-19 may include:
Recently visited or lived in an area determined by the CDC or WHO as the continuing spread of COVID-19
Have had close contact with COVID-19 patients, for example, as a family member or medical staff caring for patients infected with the virus
Preventions
Although there is no vaccine that can prevent the new coronavirus infection or even though it is but will take time to reach us so, we should reduce the risk of infection by taking appropriate measures. WHO and CDC provide the following standard preventive measures recommendations on how to avoid respiratory virus infections:
1. Wash your hands often with soap and water or alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
2. Cover your mouth and nose with your elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze.
3. Avoid touching your eyes, mouth and nose with dirty hands.
4. Avoid close contact with any patients.
5. Avoid sharing tableware, cups, bedding and other household items with others during illness.
6. Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces.
7. Avoid going to workplaces, schools and public places during illness.
WHO also provides the following recommendations:
- If you have symptoms such as fever, cough, and difficulty breathing, please contact your doctor and tell the truth about your recent travel history.
- Avoid eating raw or undercooked meat or offal.
- In areas with recent cases of the new coronavirus, you should avoid contact with live animals and the surfaces they may have touched when going to the fresh market.
Travel
If you are planning to travel abroad, please check the CDC and WHO websites for the latest news and advice. Also, look for health advice related to the places you plan to travel. If some of your health conditions may make you more susceptible to respiratory infections and complications, it is recommended that you ask your doctor for advice.
